The single overhead camshaft (SOHC), which opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves, is located over the cylinders, directly operating the valvetrain. This construction is highly efficient, with fewer moving parts than an OHV design. A single overhead camshaft also makes multiple intake and exhaust valves practical.
