The quick answer: check the year and the full name

In the US, the 2013–2018 Santa Fe has three rows; the Santa Fe Sport has two. For 2019, the older three-row model became the Santa Fe XL, while the redesigned Santa Fe has two rows. That is why two ads saying “2019 Hyundai Santa Fe” can lead you to very different family cars.

Use this table to choose the right model to search. Then open the actual listing: a third row does not automatically mean seven seats.

2019 Santa Fe XL Limited Ultimate: three rows, six seats

Hyundai’s US brochure lists the XL SE for seven passengers and the Limited Ultimate for six. If you need space for seven people, an attractive Limited Ultimate listing is not a substitute for the SE’s extra place.

Look at the entire second row. A bench and a pair of captain’s chairs solve different needs. Ask for a photo with every seat raised, then compare the cabin with the seat count in the listing and equipment record. If they disagree, resolve it before travelling.

Try the third row with the luggage you actually carry

An empty boot with the back seats folded tells you little about the school run. Ask for a second photo with the third row upright. At the viewing, try your stroller, bags or sports equipment in that arrangement.

Have the people who will use the back row try getting in and out. For child seats, use the instructions for the exact vehicle and restraint; a passenger count cannot tell you which installation will work.

Do not apply this table to a new Santa Fe

This comparison covers US listings from 2013 through 2019. Newer generations use the Santa Fe name again, so the model-year filter matters as much as the badge.

For a 2026 model, use our separate gas-and-hybrid seating guide below. It compares the second-row bench and captain’s chairs by trim, including the optional seven-seat layout on Limited.

Send the VIN and your required seat count

“I’m looking at VIN [VIN] and need seven seats. Please send a current photo of every row with the seats raised, confirm the passenger capacity, and tell me whether this car is at your location. I’d like to check access and luggage space when I visit.”
