How do you tell whether a used Tesla includes FSD?

Ask for a fresh photo of Controls → Software showing the VIN, included package and installed FSD software. Match that VIN to the car you are buying. A listing that mentions “Full Self-Driving” is a starting point; the actual software screen gives you something specific to verify.

Tesla says a previous owner’s subscription requires the buyer to subscribe separately. An outright purchase can remain with the vehicle if it was not transferred away. Ask the seller to confirm the package you will receive after ownership changes, in writing. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) requires an attentive driver and does not make the car autonomous.

Read the whole screen, including any expiration date. A trial or expiring subscription can look impressive in an equipment list. Keep the FSD entry separate from Premium Connectivity, which may have its own renewal line. A photo checked last month is also a reason to ask for a new one today.

FSD software and Computer 3 or Computer 4 are different checks

The computer identifies hardware. The included-package entry describes software entitlement. Write both down when comparing cars, and do not accept one as evidence of the other. If Computer 4 is essential to you, ask for the hardware information before arranging a visit.

The three VIN-specific seller photos reviewed for this guide on 28 Oct 2026 all showed Computer 3. They are useful starting points for a Computer 3 search. We have not verified a Computer 4 alternative for this article. Future software features and upgrade availability should not be treated as included purchase promises.

Model 3, Model Y or Model S Plaid: choose the car as well as the package

Start with how you will use the vehicle. If you already want a sedan, a Model 3 is a sensible place to focus your comparison. If passenger access and carrying everyday gear matter more, inspect the Model Y’s actual seating and cargo arrangement. Bring the items or child seats you need to fit rather than relying on a photograph.

A Model S Plaid belongs on the shortlist when you specifically want that model and its driving experience. Check the steering controls fitted to the exact car and spend time with them on a test drive. A Plaid badge does not establish FSD inclusion.

Once a car meets your software requirements, compare condition, current mileage, service records, tires and available battery-condition evidence. The Long Range name is a model designation, not a measurement of the used battery’s present range. A confirmed software package cannot answer a condition question.

Looking near Nashville or along the Wasatch Front?

Our initial photo checks covered EV Auto listings in Brentwood, Tennessee, south of Nashville, and Lehi, Utah, between Salt Lake City and Provo. The current examples show the dealer location attached to each available listing. These are specific places to start looking, not a claim that every Tesla in either market includes FSD.

Before driving across town or booking a flight, ask whether the exact VIN is at the stated location and ready to view. If you are shopping from farther away, ask the dealer about an independent inspection and any delivery arrangements separately. Availability, transport and an appointment all need the seller’s confirmation.

What to send the dealer before a visit

“Is this exact VIN still available? Please send a current Controls → Software photo showing the VIN, FSD package, software version and any expiration date, plus the computer information. Will the included FSD package remain with the car when ownership changes, or would I need a subscription? Please also send the current mileage and available service and battery-condition records.”

Open the listing you like and use its contact form to ask those questions. If a car disappears from the examples, keep the checklist and search the current Tesla catalog. Other listings may have different software packages; each replacement needs its own evidence.
