Start with the trip you need the car to do
A useful shortlist starts with your daily drive. Name the passengers, parking space, luggage and journeys the next car has to handle. Then set your budget and choose three requirements you are unwilling to drop.
Include your country and city or postal code. State your budget in Canadian dollars and your mileage limit in kilometres. A search in the wrong country can look convincing while returning cars you would never travel to buy.
For a family SUV, you might care about seating, the space left behind the last row and a particular driver-assistance feature. Keep each requirement separate. If the search finds too few cars, decide what to relax before asking for alternatives.
Help me find a used family SUV near Toronto, Ontario. First ask for my budget in Canadian dollars, maximum travel distance and three must-have features. Then use Car Handshake to find current listings. Keep confirmed facts separate from details the dealer still needs to verify.

Ask for actual listings you can open
A recommendation such as “consider a Toyota RAV4” is a starting point. To choose a car, you need an individual listing: the seller, location, model year, mileage and a link you can open. Keep the VIN or stock number with the comparison so similar cars do not get mixed up.
On Car Handshake, use the shopping assistant to describe your needs, or browse the search results yourself. If you prefer ChatGPT, open the Car Handshake plugin listing, install it if prompted, then start a chat and ask ChatGPT to use Car Handshake. Availability can depend on your account and device.
Ask the assistant which source supports each answer. An absent equipment field means the feature is unconfirmed. It does not establish that the car has it or that it lacks it.
Give every important requirement a place in the comparison
Choose two or three cars you would seriously consider. Put the same questions beside each one. A blank answer is useful: it tells you exactly what to ask before arranging a visit.
For example, a family searching for an SUV can narrow the model and location online, then check the actual seating layout and cargo space. A trim name alone should not settle whether the specific car has a second-row bench or an optional package.
| Your question | Evidence to look for | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Is it the same car? | Listing URL, VIN or stock number, model year and trim. | Resolve conflicting details with the seller. |
| Does it have the equipment I need? | A clear description, relevant photos or vehicle-specific documentation. | Ask for a current photo or written confirmation of anything missing. |
| Will the seats and luggage space work? | Photos of the actual interior and seating layout. | Try your child seats, stroller or usual luggage at the viewing. |
| What will I pay? | Advertised price, currency and any stated conditions. | Request an itemized total and check which conditions apply to you. |
| What is its condition? | Service records, vehicle-history information and inspection findings. | Arrange an independent inspection where practical. |
| Can I see it? | The selling location and listing status. | Confirm the car is still available and the visit is agreed. |
Compare these three listing URLs. For each car, show the VIN or stock number, seller, mileage, location, confirmed must-have features and unanswered questions. Cite the listing for each factual claim. Do not fill gaps with typical equipment for that model.
Send the dealer a question they can actually answer
Once a car looks plausible, open its listing and use “Ask dealer about this car.” Name the specific vehicle and the two or three unknowns that would change your decision. Asking about one identified car gives the seller something concrete to check.
For a family SUV, that might be availability, a photo of the second-row seating and the itemized purchase total. For an EV, it might be the included charging equipment and the records you need to assess the battery. Ask about what matters to your purchase, rather than sending a long generic checklist.
Review the selected dealership and contact details before sending. A question or preferred test-drive time is a request. Wait for the dealership to confirm the car and appointment before traveling.
I am interested in this vehicle. Is it still available at this location? Please confirm [my must-have feature] with a current photo or vehicle-specific document, and send an itemized purchase total. If those details work, I would like to arrange a viewing.
Why prepare for AI car shopping in 2027?
This is a guide for someone planning a purchase in 2027, checked on November 2, 2026. The examples describe capabilities available at the time of review. They are not predictions of future model releases, prices or AI features.
Cox Automotive’s 2025 Car Buyer Journey Study surveyed 2,300 US buyers. It found that 19% used AI websites or AI-generated overviews during their shopping process. The study was published in January 2026.
In a separate Q2 2026 survey of 1,502 US consumers intending to buy within 12 months, Cox found that 63% definitely or probably planned to use AI for their next purchase. That measures intention, not completed AI-assisted purchases. The two surveys are not a like-for-like growth series, and neither figure is a Canadian estimate.
For your own purchase, the useful question is whether the tool gets you closer to a car you can inspect and buy. Keep the source listing, check the unresolved facts and choose when to contact the seller.
