2026 Mazda CX-5 vs CX-50: Which One Fits Your Day?

The redesigned CX-5 changes the comparison. Separate the 2026 model from older reviews, compare the CX-50 Hybrid, and try the controls and cargo opening yourself.

Start by checking which CX-5 the review is about

The 2026 CX-5 is the redesigned model. Advice about the cabin or controls in a 2025 CX-5 does not automatically describe it. If you are comparing new cars, put the 2026 CX-5 beside the 2026 CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid, not a mix of generations.

For this comparison, the useful first split is powertrain and daily use. The CX-50 offers a Hybrid option. Mazda lists the 2026 CX-5 with a 2.5-litre gasoline engine and a new touchscreen-led cabin. Choose a shortlist, then try the things that annoy you in your current car.

US 2026 model-level reference. Equipment on an individual listing still needs confirmation.

Do the five-minute controls test before the test drive

With the car parked, adjust the temperature and fan, demist the windscreen, change audio and enter a destination. Connect your own phone. This answers a more useful question than whether the screen looks impressive in a photo.

Mazda describes a standard 12.9-inch or available 15.6-inch touchscreen for the new CX-5. Confirm the screen and connected-service conditions for the actual trim. If tactile controls matter to you, ask for a cabin photo and try both cars rather than carrying an older CX-5 review forward.

Bring the awkward thing you actually carry

Take your folded stroller, dog crate or largest regular bag to the viewing. Test the cargo opening, floor height and room with the rear seats up. Then sit behind your normal driving position. A bigger number in a cargo table does not establish that your particular item fits.

Do not use a Hybrid photo to establish the floor layout of a gasoline CX-50, or assume every trim has the same roof and seat adjustments. Ask for the exact car’s rear-seat and open-tailgate photos before travelling.

Make the dealer visit a comparison, not a second search

Pick one or two listings below. Tell the dealer: “I’m comparing the 2026 CX-5 and CX-50. Please confirm the engine and screen fitted to this VIN. I’d like to try the controls, rear seat and my cargo with the seats up.”
