Start with identity, not the headline
Two similar titles need not describe equivalent cars. Record the listing URL, VIN, model year, trim, mileage and physical dealership address. Mark an absent field as unknown instead of assuming that two cars match. Ask the seller to verify any discrepancy before traveling.
The same VIN can arrive through multiple dealer-group feeds. Car Handshake selects one eligible website offer when the VIN and full physical rooftop identity match. Different rooftops remain separate, and incomplete addresses are not guessed to be equivalent. A count of search results is therefore a count of canonical website offers, not a count of all cars for sale in the country.
Keep the advertised price and purchase total separate
A useful comparison has separate columns for the advertised vehicle price, itemized charges and the written total. Do not rank an unpriced listing as a zero-dollar car. A missing fee breakdown means unknown, not fee-free. Compare US listings in USD and Canadian listings in CAD; do not treat the same numeric amount as equivalent across countries.
The FTC recommends requesting written out-the-door prices before visiting dealerships. Ask which advertised discounts apply to you and which optional products are included. Use the written quote, not a monthly-payment headline, to establish what you are comparing.
Build a short evidence log
For each shortlisted vehicle, keep the listing URL and the date you checked it, then add the seller’s answer about availability, condition, equipment and appointment timing. Keep the answer beside the listing it concerns so an answer about one trim cannot accidentally become a fact about another.
Listing update times indicate changes in the supplied record. They do not prove that a human physically checked the vehicle at that time. A test-drive request is not a confirmed appointment. Before departing, ask the named rooftop to confirm that the specific VIN is there and available to view.
Resolve the unknown that could change your decision
If a feature is essential, ask about that feature on the exact vehicle rather than relying on a model-level description. If two prices differ, check whether the trim, condition, mileage, seller or price terms also differ. A lower advertised number alone is not evidence of better value.
Save a small shortlist, request comparable written information and remove vehicles that fail your requirements. Car Handshake’s comparison view helps organize listing fields; it does not inspect the vehicles, certify condition or guarantee the seller’s final terms.
