What should you have before booking the trip?
Start with a written confirmation that the exact VIN is physically at the named dealership and available for the appointment. Ask for a dated walk-around, current mileage and a named person who can answer the remaining questions. A catalog entry can help you shortlist a truck; it cannot reserve it or confirm that it has arrived.
Keep four parts of the decision together: the software you expect, the truck’s present condition, the documents and coverage, and the handover arrangements. Resolve any requirement that would make you cancel the purchase before you spend time travelling.
The listings reviewed for this guide included trucks in Baltimore, Manassas Park and Brentwood. These are examples from our participating inventory, not a promise of delivery to your state. The cards below refresh independently of this article.
Does a Foundation Series badge prove FSD is included?
This guide does not use a Foundation Series or Cyberbeast label as proof of the software entitlement you will receive. Request current Software-screen evidence and a written explanation of the package, any subscription or trial, and what the seller can confirm will remain after transfer.
Ask the seller to link the evidence to the truck’s VIN. If the reply is only “FSD capable,” the purchase question is still unanswered. Tesla says feature availability depends on the vehicle configuration and other factors. FSD requires active driver supervision and is not autonomous driving.

Ask for the photos a glossy gallery leaves out
Request close-ups of all four tires, their size and date markings, and measured tread depths. Ask for views of the wheels, lower body, bed and any visible damage. Have the seller demonstrate the tonneau cover, doors, charging port and cabin controls, and show any warning messages. These requests are a viewing checklist, not a claim that a particular truck has a fault.
Ask about collision repairs, modifications, commercial use and completed service. Arrange an independent inspection if the truck remains a serious candidate. The FTC cautions that a history report does not replace an independent inspection. For a remote purchase, agree who will inspect the truck and when you will receive the findings.
Check the VIN through NHTSA and request records of recall work. Do not treat an empty lookup as proof that every service action is complete. If towing matters, ask separately for the exact truck’s load and towing information rather than applying a model-wide maximum.
Plan the app transfer and charging before departure
Tesla says a third-party purchase requires the new owner to claim the vehicle in the Tesla app; being added as a driver is different. Ask who will supply the ownership documents and help resolve a transfer issue. Some benefits, upgrades and subscriptions may not transfer.
Do not build the drive home around instant account access. Agree on the truck’s charge level at collection, the keys and charging equipment included, and a charging plan if ownership verification is still pending. Follow Tesla’s current instructions for the transfer itself.
Request the VIN-specific warranty record. Any remaining factory coverage and any dealer-provided cover should be identified separately; a used truck at an independent seller does not automatically receive Tesla’s direct-sale pre-owned warranty.

Get one written reply before you commit to travel
“For VIN [VIN], please confirm the physical location and appointment availability. Please send current software evidence, tire measurements, a condition walk-around, history and warranty documents. Explain the ownership-transfer process and list the keys, charging equipment and accessories included.”
Also request an itemized written purchase total for your registration location, with optional products identified separately, and written transport or collection terms. This article publishes no vehicle prices. The FTC recommends getting the out-the-door quote before visiting; compare the seller’s actual terms rather than guessing what will be added later.
