Buying a used Hyundai? Check which warranty follows the car

Does Hyundai’s 10-year warranty transfer? Compare ordinary used and Hyundai Certified coverage, check the original in-service date, and ask about the exact VIN.

Does the 10-year Hyundai powertrain warranty transfer?

For an ordinary used Hyundai in the US, do not assume you inherit the original owner’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hyundai places second and subsequent owners’ powertrain coverage under its 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, whichever comes first. The remaining term depends on the car’s history and applicable conditions.

Hyundai Certified Used is a separate case. Its powertrain warranty can run to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date and zero miles, whichever comes first. Buying it used does not restart that clock.

Get the start date before doing the math

The model year is not the date the warranty began. Ask for the original in-service date and the current odometer reading, then have a Hyundai dealer confirm what remains for this VIN under the relevant model-year booklet.

For a simple illustration, a car with a five-year/60,000-mile limit that entered service four years ago and has traveled 52,000 miles would have at most one year or 8,000 miles before those limits, whichever comes first. That arithmetic does not confirm that a particular repair is covered or that the vehicle meets every condition.

Keep the answer in writing beside the listing. “Still under warranty” leaves out the important part: which components, until when, under whose terms, and with what exclusions?

“Certified” needs a program name and a VIN

A CPO label in a marketplace listing does not, by itself, establish Hyundai Certified Used enrollment. Ask who certifies the car and for the program documents bearing its VIN. Then read the covered-component list and exclusions, rather than treating certification as coverage for every repair.

Hyundai’s Certified Used provisions include maintenance requirements and a deductible. Ask the selling dealer to explain the terms that apply to the proposed sale, the records you must keep, and where a claim would be handled.

The FTC distinguishes a warranty from a separately purchased service contract. Get the used-car Buyers Guide and the complete written terms of anything offered. Check that the final paperwork matches the promises you relied on.

Hybrid batteries and recalls are separate checks

Do not apply the ordinary powertrain rule to every component. Hyundai’s current US overview lists separate 10-year/100,000-mile coverage for specified hybrid and EV components for original and subsequent owners. Check the applicable model-year warranty booklet and VIN record before assuming that covers the car or repair you are considering.

Also ask for service records and check open recalls by VIN. An independent inspection answers condition questions that a warranty label cannot. A recall search, a warranty record and an inspection each serve a different purpose.

A dealer request that gets a usable answer

“For VIN [VIN], please confirm the original in-service date, current mileage and remaining factory coverage for me as the next owner. Is this car enrolled in Hyundai Certified Used? If so, please send the VIN-specific program documents and full terms. Please identify any separately priced service contract, and send the Buyers Guide and available service records.”

Choose “Ask dealer for warranty details” on a listing to open its contact form. Compare the written replies alongside the cars. Current examples are not certified by this article, and their year or mileage is not a warranty promise.
