An X2 is not simply a smaller X1
BMW’s Canadian launch specifications put the new-generation X2 slightly longer and lower than the X1. Its sloping rear roof is the obvious difference, but the model year matters first: the X1 changed generation for 2023 and the X2 for 2024.
For a useful comparison, start with a 2023-or-newer X1 and a 2024-or-newer X2. Earlier cars belong to different generations. The current examples below stay within those generations through model year 2026 and link to Canadian inventory.
| Reference model | Generation | Length / height at launch |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 BMW X1 | Third generation, U11 | 4,500 / 1,642 mm |
| 2024 BMW X2 | Second generation, U10 | 4,567 / 1,590 mm |

Try the rear seat before choosing the roofline
Put the front seat in your normal position, then have your regular rear passenger get in and sit upright. Check the doorway, head clearance and view out. If you carry a child restraint, bring it and follow both manuals for the installation check.
Next, load the awkward item: a stroller, crate or suitcase. Compare the opening and the space under the closed tailgate, with the seats you need still raised. Published litres cannot tell you whether a tall item clears a sloping hatch.
Do not carry launch equipment across every model year
BMW introduced the 2023 X1 with iDrive 8 and the 2024 X2 with iDrive 9. Those are launch references, not a promise about every car in this comparison. Ask for the actual dashboard photo and software information for the VIN.
At the viewing, try climate controls, navigation, phone connection and the camera views you need. Treat an M Sport badge or a large screen as a reason to check the equipment record, not proof of a specific parking package.
